CHINA: NEW AIRPORT IN TIBET A 4. 411 METERS, THE HIGHEST IN THE WORLD

Opened in Tibet, the nearest civilian ‘top of the world: Garzi is located in the remote south-western region of Sichuan, at 4,411 meters above sea level. So far, it took two days to get from Garzi bus to Chengdu, the capital of the region, but the new airport of Daocheng connect ‘the two cities’ with less than an hour’s flight.
   The new airport has cost 1.58 billion yuan (193 million euro) and was designed to accommodate 280,000 passengers a year and to convey the tourism sector to the nearby nature reserve Yading. So far, the airport ‘top of the world was to Qamdo, always in Tibet, which rises to 4,334 meters above sea level. In recent years, China has invested several billion to modernize the old airports and build new ones, especially in the remote western regions of the country.
