For this inaugural season all teams run with the Spark-Renault STR01E and, in this first race weekend, thirty-five out of forty cars crossed the finish line without drawbacks, a great satisfaction for all the teams and technical partners who have participated in the development of the cars.
The first ‘ePrix’ was played over a distance of 25 laps and was awarded both a radiant sun that the packed grandstands of the public. In pole position is tripped Nicolas Prost (Renault e.dams), which has maintained the position of the first corner for most of the race, only to suffer an accident on the last lap, leaving the victory to Lucas di Grassi (Audi Sport ABT).
During the last lap in fact the cars of Nicolas Prost, son of the famous father Alain, and Nick Heidfeld, a former F1 driver, have become the protagonists of a terrifying incident, fortunately without any physical consequences for the drivers. Heidfeld tried to overtake but suddenly Prost closed angle was too narrow, in a move that seemed really at the limit of regularity, causing the take-off of the car of the German, who went then to impact violently into the barriers. Heidfeld, released virtually unscathed from his car, and chased after walking Prost and between the two, immediately after the incident, has unleashed a heated debate, which has all the appearance of continuing to feed the controversy between the two even in the next weeks.
The podium was completed by Franck Montagny (Andretti) and Sam Bird (Virgin Racing).
Debut bitter, however, for the Pescara Jarno Trulli. Former Formula One champion has been betrayed by his car at the start. The Abruzzo was forced to retire due to problems with his car, while his teammate, Michela Cerruti ended his race in thirteenth position.
